Opener Tony de Zorzi anchored the Proteas’ innings with 78 off 145 balls as they scored 344/8 on day two of the rain-affected first Test against the West Indies on Thursday.
De Zorzi shared a 51-run partnership with skipper Temba Bavuma, who top scored with 86 off 182 balls.
Speaking to journalists after the day’s play, De Zorzi was pleased with how he played, but felt he would have liked to have put more runs on the board after being dismissed by Jomel Warrican.
“I thought it was alright,” the 26-year-old De Zorzi said after the day’s play.
“I would have liked to have kicked on a bit. Temba and I had a nice partnership there after Tristan [Stubbs] went out, so it was important for us to consolidate, so I’m happy with my contribution towards the team [total],” said de Zorzi.
Asked about the Queen's Park Oval wicket, the opener, who is still relatively new to Test cricket, added he had played on similar pitches during his first class career.
“We do have a couple of coastal wickets that tend to play like this as the games go on for four day cricket,” he said.
“Even in Cape Town and Paarl — which is not really a coastal wicket — but it starts to play similar, so I’d say we have a few.”
With Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder in the middle, South African will be hoping to put more runs on the board when play gets underway at 4pm South African time on Friday.
Mulder is currently on 37, while Rabada is on 12.
