There is a long way back for Springboks centre Lukhanyo Am to reclaim the No 13 jersey from the in-form Jesse Kriel. But that road starts on Saturday in Bloemfontein.
Am will make his first start for the Springboks against Portugal at the Free State Stadium in almost a year following a spate of injuries that has seen him play second fiddle behind Kriel.
Kriel has been sensational, playing a key part in the Springboks’ World Cup win and also starring in the two Tests against Ireland and the one-off match against Wales.
Kriel also had to bide his time behind Am, who since the 2019 World Cup was regarded as the best outside centre on the planet. But now the roles are reversed, with Am fighting to get the jersey back. He is certainly taking that challenge head on.
“It’s been an up-and-down 24 months with injuries, so I’m very excited about the opportunity to play,” said Am.
Am, like the other Springbok backs, has started working with new attacking coach Tony Brown over the last few months.
It’s clear to see that the Boks are keeping hold of the ball a lot more, which will suit Am’s top ability to create and to be that striker runner in the wide channels.
“I was thrilled to be called up to the team and to have the chance to work with the coaching staff,” said Am.
“Tony has been trying to evolve our game and I believe we are on the right track, although we are still trying to master our new way of playing. But the more we try to action it on the field, the better things will click in that regard.”
The 35-Test veteran was delighted to see a few young players receive opportunities to make their mark on the international stage after the Springboks made wholesale changes for the encounter.
There will be some familiar faces on his inside and outside, though, with all the players picked in the backline part of the World Cup-winning squad.
“It’s great that there’s some new blood coming through, and they bring a fresh energy to the team.
“This will be a great occasion for them as individuals and for the team, and while there may be some nerves, I’m sure they’ll get past that and focus on the task at hand.
“We have a common goal as a team and we know that it’s going to be a massive challenge against Portugal, but it will be the same for us.”
