CAPE TOWN - Durban is a happy hunting ground for SuperSport United stalwart, Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane. Letsholonyane has never lost an MTN8 cup final in Durban in his career. MTN8 finals in Durban are his bread and butter.
On Saturday, Yeye will be hoping to keep his unbeaten record intact at Moses Mabhida Stadium when SuperSport United face Cape Town City in this year's final (Kick-off at 7pm). Apart from the MTN8, Yeye has amassed two Nedbank Cup triumphs and the Telkom Knockout crown in Durban.
The 36-year-old has only tasted defeat once in Durban, and came at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout final that was held at Mabhida in 2015. The Brazilians thumped Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 to lift the TKO crown.
Letsholonyane earned his first silverware in Durban back in 2008 when he was still at Kaizer Chiefs, as Amakhosi defeated Sundowns 4-3 on penalties. The final was played at Kings Park. In 2010, Letsholonyane returned to Kings Park where he lifted the Telkom Knockout at the expense of Ajax Cape Town as Chiefs stormed to a 2-1 victory.
The love affair between Yeye and Durban continued in 2013 when Amakhosi downed SuperSport 1-0 to win the Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida. His last piece of silverware for Chiefs was back in 2015 against Orlando Pirates at the same stadium in the final of the MTN8.
In his spell with United, Yeye has captured two gold medals in Durban. In 2017, he won two cups, as he was the part of SuperSport side which humiliated Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final as they walloped the Bucanneers 4-1. Last season, Letsholonyane helped Matsatsantsa A Pitori to their MTN8 triumph against City at Moses Mabhida.
He will be hoping to add yet another medal to his large collection. Letsholonyane is searching for his fourth MTN8 crown, and has suffered defeat just once in the MTN8 final. It wasn’t in Durban though - it was played at FNB Stadium, and Oupa Manyisa’s solitary strike was enough for Pirates to lift the MTN8 in 2011.
