CAPE TOWN – Itumeleng Khune was missed by Kaizer Chiefs fans at the weekend, and it seems his coach Giovanni Solinas did too.
The Amakhosi captain and goalkeeper rejoined the team on Monday after sitting out the 3-0 MTN8 win over Free State Stars on Saturday. Khune had requested leave following his girlfriend Sbahle Mpisane’s car accident last Thursday.
Mpisane remains in ICU at the St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban. But now Khune is back in time for Tuesday night’s Absa Premiership clash against Baroka FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane (7.30pm kickoff). Solinas, though, must still decide whether the 31-year-old will take over from the injured Virgil Vries in goal.
“We have three goalkeepers in camp,” Solinas told the Kaizer Chiefs website on Tuesday. “We will mull about the selection of the goalkeeper, but it’s good to see that Khune is back in camp and available for selection.”
Apart from Khune, the other goalkeepers available for tonight’s match are Brylon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma. Chiefs said that Joseph Molangoane, who sustained a broken ankle against Stars, and Vries have been joined on the sidelines by George Maluleka and Teenage Hadebe.
Baroka lost their opening league game away against AmaZulu, but then beat Cape Town City at home, so Solinas is expecting a tough encounter. “I have the necessary information to plan against Baroka. I’ve watched their two league games – they press the opponents high on the pitch, and they are organised defensively.”
