Gastin Sirino will be key to Kaizer Chiefs’ ambitions for the upcoming season, as the club look to return to their glory days.
Amakhosi confirmed the signing of the Uruguayan on Sunday after he was let go by champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the last campaign.
Sundowns’ decision to let the 33-year-old forward is believed to have contributed to the breakdown in the relationship between then head coach Rulani Mokwena and sporting director Flemming Berg.
Mokwena has since left Sundowns and joined Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.
Speaking after Sirino’s signing, Chiefs’ sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr highlighted the key factors that convinced them to get the deal done.
“We decided to add some experience to our team by bringing in Sirino,” Motaung Jr was quoted by Hollywoodbets.
“We know his quality and believe he will help us this coming season. We’re looking forward to him sharing his experience with our younger players.”
Motaung also waxed lyrical about Sirino’s ability with the ball at his feet, which was known to get fans on their feet during his time with the Brazilians.
“Gaston’s ability to unlock a tight defence with his guile and craft will add an extra dimension to the team’s creativity.
“His attributes fit with our idea of how we want to play,” Motaung Jr added.
Speaking before the club concluded the deal, new Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach Nasreddine Nabi said the club found it difficult to bring in new players in a tough transfer market.
“A lot of clubs don’t want to release their players to us. They don’t want to sell their players to us,” the Tunisian said last week on SuperSport.
“But we still need to look, battle and find those players whom we are going to put on the field and give us a plus.”
