In a shocking admission that might not sit well with some Kaizer Chiefs fans, former interim head coach Cavin Johnson has revealed that he has always been a lifelong Orlando Pirates fan.
Johnson was the interim head coach last season when the mighty Kaizer Chiefs struggled all season, eventually finishing outside the top 8. Since those stuttering days, Chiefs are now coached by Tunisian tactician Nasredinne Nabi, who has brought hope back at Naturena.
In an interview with former Chiefs attacker Junior Khanye, Johnson conceded he has always been a fan of the Buccaneers, adding that he frequented Orlando during his teenage days.
"As a youngster, and this is going to kill the people, locally, I have always been a Pirates fan. It’s the people’s team.
“In my teenage years, I always went to Orlando and Pirates, we could identify with Jomo (Sono) and a lot of the guys who were there and they always had a diversified team," Johnson told Khanye.
Johnson added that Pirates, always had diverse players back in the day.
"If you were going to Orlando and the police stop and ask, ‘What are you doing here?’ We would lie and say, ‘no no, I’m going to watch my uncle’. Pirates always had a mixture of players.”
Johnson, who was initially hired as the head of the academy at Chiefs, took over as head coach of Kaizer Chiefs after the sacking of Molefe Ntseki.
He then led the team to a disappointing 10th-place finish in the league. Following the club’s poor performance, Johnson was not retained as coach, and is currently without a job.
