Durban — The community of Nkandla is mourning the Mayor, Mbhekiseni “Bhejani” Biyela, who will be laid to rest on Friday, following his death from illness on Sunday.
The IFP leader, known for his unwavering dedication to his constituents, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and service.
Thamsanqa Ntuli, the provincial chairperson of the IFP and current Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, expressed the profound sense of loss felt not only by the people of Nkandla but also across the provincial government.
“This is a devastating loss for the people of Nkandla and the provincial government, particularly the Nkandla Local Municipality. As a community member and local constituent, Biyela was a dedicated and hardworking leader, whose service to the people remains unparalleled,” he said.
Ntuli extended “heartfelt condolences” on behalf of the provincial government, highlighting Biyela’s selfless commitment to improving the lives of the Nkandla residents.
“His dedication and selfless commitment to the betterment of Nkandla will be remembered,” he added.
IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said: “The Inkatha Freedom Party has received with profound sadness the heartbreaking news of the passing of the Mayor of Nkandla.”
He praised Biyela for his unwavering dedication and commitment to every role he took on within the party, asserting that his leadership qualities inspired many.
“His leadership, discipline, and integrity as Mayor of Nkandla have been an inspiration to many, and the IFP is immensely proud of the legacy of service he leaves behind.
Hlengwa extended condolences to Biyela's family, friends, and the broader Nkandla community.
"As the people of Nkandla gather to pay their final respects, they will undoubtedly remember a leader who worked tirelessly for their betterment and to uphold the values of his community and party," said Hlengwa.
