In a gripping encounter of the Nedbank Cup last 32 round, Chippa United triumphed over Golden Arrows in a dramatic late show that left fans on the edge of their seats.

With a final score of 2-1, Chippa advanced after a pulsating match at the Mpumalanga Stadium on Saturday, marking a significant moment in their cup campaign.

The match kicked off with both sides eager to claim victory, with Arrows creating an early opportunity within just seven minutes.

Winger Angelo Van Rooi showcased his skills as he charged towards goal, only to be thwarted by Chippa's goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, who proved to be in inspired form.

This initial chance set the tone for a competitive first half, filled with near misses and brilliant saves.

As the matches developed, Chippa United started to gain momentum, and in the 71st minute, they broke the deadlock through Bafana Bafana midfielder Sinoxolo Kwayiba.

Emerging unmarked from a set-piece, Kwayiba managed to scramble the ball past keeper Ismail Watenga, sending the travelling supporters into raptures. However, the lead was short-lived.

Just four minutes later, Golden Arrows equalised in controversial fashion. Defender Brandon Theron’s shot was deemed to have crossed the line during a frantic goalmouth scramble, reigniting hope among the Arrows faithful.

Yet, as the match intensified, Theron would face an unfortunate turn of fate. Just two minutes after the equaliser, he inadvertently turned Aphelele Teto’s low cross into his own net, handing Chippa United a 2-1 lead.

Coach Musa Bilankulu had fielded a strong starting line-up, save for striker Bongani Cele making his first start for the club.

It was evident that both teams were keen to assert their dominance. Ex-Arrows coach Mabhuti Khenyeza’s presence on the bench for Chippa added an extra layer of intensity as they pushed for the win.

The first half ended goalless, though it could have been otherwise if not for a string of ineffable saves by Nwabali, who denied multiple attempts, including a crucial header from Gladwin Shitolo just before the break.

The second half, however, saw a revitalised Arrows emerge, pressing forward in search of victory, although they were met with resolute defending from the Chilli Boys.

As the final minutes approached, the game erupted into chaos. With three goals scored in rapid succession, the tension amongst players and supporters alike reached its peak, demonstrating the thrilling unpredictability of cup football.

With this victory, Chippa United looks ahead to an encounter against Polokwane City next weekend, while Golden Arrows will be regrouping for a tough trip to face defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
