The Johannesburg Metro police department (JMPD) is urging all motorists to prioritise safety, obey the traffic laws, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or any other substances.

This is amid the arrest of 168 motorists by JMPD officers for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) report, an estimated 58% of road fatalities in South Africa involve alcohol. While post-crash data in South Africa is limited or not measured accurately, these startling statistics underscore the urgent need for awareness and responsible actions.

The RTMC noted that alcohol-related incidents cost South Africa around R18.2 billion annually. This figure not only quantifies the economic impact but also represents countless lives disrupted and families affected.

JMPD superintendent Xolani Fihla said they are deeply concerned about the number of motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in the past week.

He said from August 12 to August 15, a total of 168 motorists were apprehended by JMPD officers through patrols, attending complaints, and targeted operations.

Fihla said driving under the influence of alcohol poses a severe threat not only to the driver but also to passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

He said the consequences of such irresponsible behaviour can be devastating, leading to accidents, injuries or even loss of life.

He said it is imperative for all motorists to understand the dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol and the importance of making responsible choices behind the wheel.

“The JMPD reiterates its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring road safety for all residents and visitors. We will continue to enforce strict measures to deter and apprehend individuals who choose to endanger themselves and others by driving while intoxicated,” Fihla said.

Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1998 determines that the legal alcohol limit in South Africa for driving must be less than 0.05 g of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. For a breathalyser test, the concentration of alcohol must be less than 0.24mg of alcohol per 1 000ml of breath.

According to Arrive Alive, if you kill someone while driving under the influence, of liquor you can go to jail and also be fined up to R180 000. You could furthermore lose your license and get a criminal record of up to 10 years.

You could also be given a suspended sentence. This means that if you are caught again, the previous penalties, plus the new penalty will come into effect.
