As South Africa approaches the end of Youth Month, DJ and music producer Thato “Kelvin Momo” Ledwaba gets the spotlight to celebrate young people influencing the country’s music scene.
Ledwaba, a prominent figure in Amapiano, has captivated audiences with his unique blend of jazz, deep house and lounge influences, earning him the title of king of private school Amapiano.
The official South African charts reveal that Momo secures multiple spots on both the local top 100 and the international top 200 with his smash hits Pholisa, Amalobolo, and Uhambe Wrongo.
Momo’s effective partnerships are demonstrated by Pholisa, one of the album’s outstanding tracks. This tune, which was co-written by Babalwa M, Stixx, and Baby S.O.N., is a stand-out from her album Pisces. It is now ranked #9 in the local charts and #22 globally.
Uhambe Wrongo, another outstanding collaboration with Bandros and Smash SA featuring Mr Maker, comes in right behind at #10 in the local charts and #23 globally, demonstrating Momo’s adaptability and capacity to connect with a wide range of global audiences.
Momo’s critically praised third album, Kurhula, which was released to great acclaim in December 2023, included the song Amalobolo, which is currently ranked #11 on the local top 100 and #24 on the international top 200 charts.
Kurhula, which in Xitsonga means peace, is a reflection of the album’s promise to bring serenity via deeply moving songs.
Earlier this month, the infectious Tshwala Bam by Pretoria’s hottest duo, TitoM and Yuppe, featuring the captivating vocals of S.N.E. and the electrifying production of EeQue, was also recognised.
Tshwala Bam, a chart-topper, has amassed millions of streams and is ranked #1 on both the local top 100 and international top 200, showcasing domestic talent’s global influence.
The pair, known for their collaboration on Tshwala Bam, have gained recognition for their music, recently releasing a remix featuring Nigerian Afrobeat megastar Burna Boy.
Tshwala Bam, a viral song released in February, sparked a dance craze, with its music video amassing two million views in seven days. International stars like Davido, Tiwa Savage, Chris Brown, Jason Derulo, and Les Twins joined the challenge.
