With multiple fire incidents reported in Gauteng due to prevailing cold weather, Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Joburg’s Emergency Management Services, has advised residents to exercise caution when using heating devices.
Mulaudzi announced that the unit is on high alert, particularly in informal settlements, for potential fire incidents.
“Residents are urged to continue to exercise caution when using heating devices such as paraffin stoves, braziers/imbaulas, not to leave them unattended while in use to prevent fire incidents at home.
“City of Joburg EMS units remain on high alert overnight, monitoring all seven regions of the City of Johannesburg, especially our informal settlements since they are the most vulnerable communities when we experience extremely cold temperatures.
“Fires can be disastrous if not dealt with quickly. In a fire emergency, every second counts, and getting the fire department to the property as soon as possible is crucial.’’
Charnel Hattingh, Fidelity Services Group’s communications and marketing group head, has developed a “Fire Safety Checklist” to identify potential fire hazards in residential spaces.
Hattingh notes a rise in fires during the winter season as people strive to combat the cold weather.
“A fire at your home can happen when you least expect it, and that is why it is good to have measures in place to avoid excessive damage or loss,” said Hattingh.
Smoke alarms
Smoke detectors are an excellent idea to install around your home and where you have an accumulation of electronic equipment that needs recharging.
Fire extinguishers
Ideally, one should have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and garage. It is also useful to consider adding a fire blanket with the fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
Electrical safety
Ensure all electrical cords and plugs are in good condition without frays or damage. Electrical outlets should not be overloaded with too many plugs.
Heating appliances
Heaters should be placed at least 1m away from flammable materials, such as curtains, furniture, or bedding, and if you have a fireplace, the chimney and vents are cleaned and inspected annually.
Kitchen safety
Stoves and ovens should be free from grease build-up and all flammable items, such as dish towels.
Candles and open flames
Ensure candles are placed on sturdy holders and kept far away from curtains, bedding, and other flammable materials. They should be extinguished before bed.
