MEMBERS of the 1996-2000 Housing Waiting Committee (HWC) have threatened a protest march and land grab if the Department of Human Settlements does not meet their demand for houses.

A meeting in Emndeni South yesterday was attended by over 100 members who have been waiting for RDP houses they applied for in 1996.

The committee sent a memorandum of grievances to Pretoria in May. When they had no response, they resubmitted it in July. It was acknowledged last week.

HWC members complained that the houses they applied for legally were being allocated to other people illegally. The Lefhureng development in particular was a concern, as they alleged corrupt allocations to people who did not deserve houses.

They threatened to “take the land by force” if they did not get satisfactory answers.
