GRANT WINTER

TEN-YEAR-OLD Nkululeko Dlamini has pretty much got his future golf career mapped out. He’s going to be a great champion one day, and win tournaments all over the world.

Like his hero Tiger Woods?

“Yes, like Tiger. But they’ll call me Cheetah, or maybe Lion,” says the youngster after hitting another sweetly timed shot in the specially constructed golf net at Kwadedangendlae High School in Zola.

His friend Vuyo Nogwaba also aspires to be famous one day, and already has what looks like a pretty good golf swing. Even though he’s also only 10, one can detect a lot of feel in the way he sets himself up to address the ball.

“How hard can you hit the ball, Vuyo?” “Harder than hard,” he replies with enthusiasm. “I like soccer too, but now golf is the only one for me.”

So what is it that has changed the direction of his aspirations? It’s something called the Kwadeda Golf Project, which was officially opened at the school on Tuesday, with Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula in attendance.
