THE big screen is always a winner on the festive holidays itinerary.

This year there are a few anticipated releases over December.

A highlight is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which released on December 9.

There will also be a Puss in Boots costume character tour in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban from December 15 to 31. One of the stops include Ster-Kinekor Gateway on December 28 from 2.30pm to 5pm.

Here’s a list of films on the big screen this festive season:

* Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (now showing, animation): This December, everyone’s favourite leche-loving, swashbuckling, fear-defying feline returns. For the first time in more than a decade, DreamWorks Animation presents a new adventure in the Shrek universe as daring outlaw Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way.

Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet. Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the notorious Puss in Boots as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. It also features Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek), Perro (Harvey Guillén), Goldilocks (Florence Pugh), “Big” Jack Horner (John Mulaney) and The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura).

PUSS IN BOOTS will be doing a costume character tour in South Africa and will be visiting malls and shopping centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban from 16th December to 31 December.

* Detective Knight: Redemption (now showing, action): In custody in New York, detective James Knight finds himself in the middle of a jailbreak led by The Christmas Bomber, a brutal fanatic whose Santa Claus disciples are terrorising the city.

He finds a dumb-looking kid who plays a pipe and has his very own horde of rats, who are strangely literate. It features the voices of Hugh Laurie, Emilia Clarke, David Thewlis, Himesh Patel, Gemma Arterton and Hugh Bonneville.

More films are on the way, including Shotgun Wedding. Picture: SterKinekor

* Shotgun Wedding (December 30, action/comedy/romance): Darcy and Tom get their lovable but very opinionated families for the ultimate destination wedding just as the couple get cold feet. It stars Jennifer Coolidge, Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel and DʼArcy Carden.
