LIFESTYLE - THE 2022 Formula 1 has kicked off with F1 commentator Kriya Gangiah also launching a podcast on Jacaranda FM named F1: Track This.
The podcast will stream every Thursday before a race weekend on Jacaranda FM’s podcast platform online and it is available on all the major podcast apps like Apple and Spotify.
Gangiah said her love for motor sport, and sport in general, was rooted in her upbringing.
“I grew up in a home where my dad was supportive and encouraging. I was also the only girl in our family at the time. Everybody else, from a cousin point of view, was male. So from early in life I started playing cricket and soccer, and the boys were very into their cars, especially my dad. Every Sunday in our house was a Formula 1 afternoon. It became a tradition.”
Through the podcast, Gangiah said she hoped to elevate fan interaction for the world’s premier motor sport.
“Formula 1 is an opinionated sport, if you want to put it that way. Everybody has an opinion on it, everyone has a favourite driver, everyone has a favourite team. I noticed over the years, with being involved in motor sport, not only in South Africa but internationally as well, that the people love to talk about it. They want to know what’s happening. They want to know the analysis.
“I thought since we don’t really have that in South Africa any more, with SuperSport bringing in the international feeds from platforms like Sky Sports, we don't have South African commentators who are really discussing the topic the way that South Africans would, so I thought why not do it.
“I have great ties in the motor sport world, so I have roped in South African race car drivers, South African fans, people who might be a motor sports journalist, they might be an average Joe, people who have an interest in the sport and who want to share their opinion. It's just about starting to create those authentic South African conversations around the sport.”
The podcast will stream for the 2022 season.
Gangiah said she hoped Jacaranda would sign on for 2023.
As to whether there was a possibility of the podcast evolving into a TV show, she said this was a possibility.
“I’m not going to say that it is not going to happen. We might already be in talks for it, so it’s one of those things that you are going to have to look out for.
“Keep an eye on the platform. Also, if anybody wants to get involved, we will start opening it up for people to submit their motivations as to why they want to be on the show.”
