FACED with a financial crisis, Childline KZN is appealing to the public for assistance.
Adeshini Naicker, the director for the non-profit organisation, said over the past year they have suffered loss of about R60 000 per month from government funding and R85 000 per month from a corporate grant that was not renewed.
They will be hosting an emergency fundraiser at St James on Venice on Venice Road in Durban on December 10 at 4.30pm.
“We rely heavily on donations, government funding, and grants to run our helpline and services. However, funding has been reduced or delayed, while the demand for services has increased, and economic challenges have impacted our donors and sponsors. Furthermore, rising operational costs, especially for utilities and fuel, have made it even harder to meet our financial needs,” she said.
Naicker said the organisation’s helpline received nearly 10 000 calls each month from children in need.
“They reach out for help with issues such as physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, neglect, bullying, family problems, mental health struggles, and substance abuse. Our helpline is confidential and provides support, counselling, and referrals throughout the year.”
Naicker said if they are unable to raise enough money, they may have to scale back on their services and could run out of resources in the next few months.
“We may have to reduce staff or stop essential services that children depend on. December is a particularly crucial month since it is our busiest period. The lack of funding now can create a cycle where future payments become even more difficult.
“However, if we can make it through December with extra funds, we are hopeful that with continued effort and generous donor support, we can manage in the following months,” she said.
Naicker added that it was crucial to ensure they could keep running, especially during high-risk periods like the holidays.
“We see an increase in calls for help during the festive season. The holiday season often leads to more family conflicts and financial strain, prompting children to reach out for help. Furthermore, with school closure, children may spend more time at home, where they might face neglect or abuse.
“These issues are now becoming critical, and we need help to stay operational and continue supporting the children who rely on us,” she said.
