An "elderly male" was arrested by Durban Metro Police after he was found selling cleansing and solid waste refuse bags, which belonged to the eThekwini Municipality, at a flea market in Greyville.
Boysie Zungu, Durban Metro Police Spokesperson, said the suspect was charged for theft of municipal property.
“The suspect is an elderly male. We are still trying to find out how he got a hold of the refuse bags or where he got them from. We arrested him on Sunday at the flea market in Greyville. It is the one opposite the racecourse."
The suspect was found with 60 clear packets, each containing 100 cleansing and solid waste refuse bags worth R6 000. He also had three sealed bags, each containing 26 cleansing and solid waste refuse bags. The price at which the suspect was selling the bags were not specified.
Zungu said selling the refuse bags was illegal.
These black refuse bags are part of the municipality's service to the city and are delivered to households free every quarter.
