Food for Love Africa, a non-profit organisation, is embarking on its annual rice drive on Heritage Day on September 24. It's an initiative they have led for the past four years with the aim of eradicating hunger.
The Verulam based non-profit has 12 operational kitchens across South Africa and has collected more than 150 tons of rice since the inception of the initiative four years ago.
Lisa Sukdev, the spokesperson for Food for Love Africa, said the NPO had “mastered supply chain and production processes” which enabled them to serve a hot meal at R7 per plate.
Now in its fifth collection drive, Food for Love Africa is inviting the public to be a part of the day at River Range Ranch in Verulam.
Sukdev said the drive was a lifeline for many, given that more than 50% of South Africans lived below the poverty line. While it is intended to feed the needy, the drive also plans to be a motoring spectacle with a host of super cars and motorcycles and even a helicopter taking part in the event.
“Picture a convoy led by a helicopter with a thrilling mix of super bikes and cars, Harley Davidsons, sports cars, classic cars, trucks, and buses, all making their way from Pick 'n Pay Hyper to the organisation’s headquarters. This grand convoy celebrates the love of cars and the love of giving.
“Thousands are expected to participate in this year’s drive, creating a sight to behold for any car enthusiast, but more importantly, contributing to a cause that changes lives. The funds raised during the Rice Drive will allow Food for Love Africa to continue preparing and distributing meals that offer the essential nutrients to keep children healthy, parents strong, and communities hopeful."
She said this year, local philanthropist and businessman Gerald Anthony, from P&A Fabricators, hoped to bring in 60 tons of rice to mark his 60ths birthday.
"Every year Gerald and his team contribute the highest single contribution of funds to the event,” added Sukdev.
