A Shallcross woman, accused of scamming couples who were planning their weddings by taking their cash and failing to provide services to them, was detained on Tuesday.

The 53-year-old woman, who was linked to 17 cases where couples were scammed, was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) after they posted information about the alleged wedding scam on social media.

According to Rusa, this alerted a detective from SAPS Boksburg North, who linked her to two of his cases.

“A detective contacted us saying the woman was the same suspect who was wanted for two cases of fraud registered in Gauteng in 2024. The woman had defrauded a car dealership of R200 000 and a couple for R26 000. Once we had the case numbers, we lured her on Monday morning and after a brief interview, she was arrested.

“She informed officers that she was a criminal attorney and had been barred by the Law Society after she stole funds from a client's trust fund account. It was later established that she was previously convicted for fraud and has a criminal record and a history of scams spanning over 20 years,” Balram said.

Detectives from SAPS Boksburg North are travelling to KwaZulu-Natal to transport the suspect back to Gauteng for further investigations.
