Cape Town - The man believed to have shot and wounded a Metro Police officer in Hanover Park has died in hospital.

Police confirmed that the case docket was now in the hands of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The officer had been chasing the suspect after he had allegedly shot and wounded another man in Hanover Park when the drama unfolded.

Police, together with City officials, confirmed that the officers had chased the suspect, who had then allegedly opened fire on them.

The officer was shot in the foot and when the team returned fire, the suspect was left wounded and rushed to hospital where he later died.

Police also confirmed that a 23-year-old man was also left wounded during a shooting in Stonelands Road in Hanover Park on Tuesday, just after 8am.

Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk explained: “The 21-year-old victim in the shooting incident reported on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 in Downwood Road, Hanover Park, Philippi, died in hospital due to injuries sustained.

“Also in a reported incident on Tuesday, at about 08.20am, Philippi police attended to a shooting incident at Stonelands Road, Hanover Park,” he said.

According to reports, a 23-year-old male was shot and sustained three gunshot wounds to his body.

“Medical personnel attended to the victim at the crime scene from where he was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

“An attempted murder case was opened for investigation. Suspects are unknown and no arrest has been made,” he said.

IPID’s spokesperson, Lizzy Suping said: “We can confirm that IPID is investigating the matter and we will pronounce once the investigation is completed.

The City’s Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith also confirmed that community members had attacked officers by throwing stones at them while others had assisted them.

He explained that last week another Metro Police officer was wounded during a hit and run incident in Philippi and that a 30-year-old suspect was arrested and charged.

The suspect had failed to stop at a roadblock and attempted to flee but was later caught by Metro Police.

The wounded officer sustained injuries to his back and bruises.
