Severe weather warning for Joburg: Flash flooding and dangerous driving conditions expected

As a strong weather system descends on Gauteng, Johannesburg motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution while navigating the province's roads. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a clear warning: persistent rain and afternoon thunderstorms are predicted, creating hazardous conditions that threaten the safety of all road users.
The weather authority reported that intermittent showers have already begun, significantly reducing visibility and creating slippery road surfaces. This heightens the risk of serious accidents, particularly during the busy morning and evening traffic peaks when the roads are most congested. Motorists are advised to adjust their driving habits to mitigate risks associated with these unfavourable conditions.
In an official statement, SAWS emphasised the importance of remaining alert while driving through the downpours.
"With on-and-off rain reducing visibility over the eastern parts of the country, including Gauteng, please drive with extra caution and keep a safe following distance," the SAWS said.
The weather service added that the combination of drizzle and sudden bursts of heavier rain can quickly create patches of standing water, causing vehicles to hydroplane if drivers fail to reduce their speed.
Adding to the growing concern, the Gauteng Police Board initiative issued a separate warning, emphasising the likelihood of dangerous road conditions as storms intensify later in the day.
"Thunderstorms are expected to continue across Gauteng until this evening, and we expect reports to start coming in soon of flooded roads. Please be alert for any dangerous conditions and take all precautions for safety," the board said.
Forecasters have issued a warning for flash flooding across various regions, particularly in low-lying suburbs and along major highways. With the potential for sudden heavy rainfall, local authorities and meteorologists are urging residents and motorists alike to take precautions to ensure safety.
