South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel "Nathi" Mthethwa, has been found dead in Paris just a day after he was reported missing. The 58-year-old diplomat’s body was discovered outside the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile, located in the affluent Porte Maillot district, raising serious concerns regarding the circumstances of his untimely demise.

French media outlets have reported that it is believed the ambassador fell from the 22nd floor of the hotel. However, local authorities have yet to confirm the specifics surrounding his death.

Mthethwa was officially reported missing on Monday evening. His sudden disappearance and subsequent death have prompted both French and South African authorities to launch investigations.

At the time of publication, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) had not issued an official statement. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.

However, Chrispin Phiri the spokesperson for the Ministry, said:" We are aware of unfortunate reports about Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa we will issue statement once there is official information."

Mthethwa, a seasoned politician and former Cabinet minister, was appointed as ambassador in 2024.
