In a significant operation that underscores the commitment of South African law enforcement to safeguard national symbols and combat counterfeit crime, the Metro Police, alongside various agencies, successfully recovered over R1.1 million worth of counterfeit Springbok-branded merchandise.

The eThekwini Municipality confirmed this impressive seizure, which included a staggering 781 items designed to mimic the beloved national rugby team's branding.

Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu stressed the importance of the Counterfeit Goods Act, noting that it plays a pivotal role in ensuring the removal of illicit products that undermine legitimate businesses.

Colonel Zungu added that the operation forms part of “ongoing efforts to curb crime in the City, in all its forms,” highlighting the continued commitment by authorities to tackle various forms of criminal activity across the municipality.

The crackdown comes shortly after the Springboks played against Argentina at Kings Park Stadium in Durban over the past weekend, an event which likely saw increased demand for official merchandise.
