The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that former SA teacher Iain Wares, who handed himself over to authorities last week, in the latest consolidation of charges relating the sexual and physical abuse of 65 boys, with an indictment listing 90 charges, has appointed a lawyer to deal with his extradition process.
Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the NPA said Wares was facing a mammoth of charges relating to sexual abuse.
“Iain Wares handed himself in at Simon's Town Magistrate’s Court where he was arrested and appeared in court charged with 90 new counts which include 60 counts of sexual assault, four counts of rape, 25 counts of assault and a count of crimen injuria,” Ntbazalila stated.
“The alleged crimes were committed in 1960 and 1970s. They involved teenage boys in Edinburgh, Scotland.
“His case has been postponed until November 20 for Wares to appoint a legal representative to deal with the extradition.”
Images of Wares were taken by an international media house, showing his lawyer, Ben Matthewson, assisting him while he was taken down to court holding cells.
Wares was granted R10 000 bail on the same day.
Earlier this month, Wares, who is facing a separate case, dating back to four decades ago involving an allegation of indecent assault of a former learner of his at Rondebosch Preparatory Boys , denied the claims while taking the witness stand.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg also confirmed that Wares went directly to the court house.
Cape Argus reached out to INTERPOL to confirm whether they formed part of his arrest involving the extradition process but did not receive a response.
Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) who have been following the matter for years said this was a victory.
