Police are investigating an incident this morning at Table Bay Harbour where an adult male’s body was retrieved from the water, and his child, believed to be between the ages of five and ten, was safely rescued and is being treated medically.

Information about the sensitive incident is sketchy at the moment, with police not confirming whether it was a suicide.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a search had taken place at the harbour when the man and the child disappeared underneath the water.

During an earlier response, Twigg said the Table View police and SAPS divers were on the scene in Table Bay Harbour where a man and a child were spotted in the water. The child was retrieved from the water, and the search for the man was ongoing at the time.

Later, Twigg confirmed that the man’s body had been recovered. SAPS could not confirm whether it was a suicide, but that the circumstances are currently under investigation.

“Table Bay Harbour police registered an inquest for investigation after the body of an adult male was retrieved from the water on Thursday morning, December 4. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,” he explained.

“A child between the ages of five and ten was taken to a medical facility for treatment after he was retrieved from the water. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
