A spate of shooting incidents across Cape Town over the weekend left five people dead and at least five others wounded, with police probing multiple murder and attempted murder cases reported across at least six suburbs. The incidents unfolded separately from the deadly Marikana mass shooting in Philippi East, adding to an already grim weekend of gun violence across the city.

The shootings occurred within a tight time frame from Friday afternoon into Saturday, cutting across Muizenberg, Maitland, Gugulethu, Philippi East, Kraaifontein and Belhar, underscoring the continued reach of gun violence across multiple communities.

Among the victims was a 15-year-old boy, shot and killed shortly after 5.05pm on Friday in St Peter’s Street, Seawind, Muizenberg. He was found lying in the road with a gunshot wound to the back of the head and was declared dead at the scene. Police believe the killing may be gang-related.

Earlier that afternoon, at about 2.03pm, a 35-year-old man was shot and killed at the corner of Patton and Coronation roads in Maitland. He was found next to his vehicle with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

In Gugulethu, a shooting at a property in David Street, New Crossroads, left one man dead and three others injured. A 24-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, while two women and another man were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

The violence continued on Saturday afternoon when two men, aged 32 and 44, were shot dead in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East. Both were found on a footpath with multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police also registered three attempted murder cases on Friday afternoon. An 18-year-old man was shot in the neck in Kraaifontein and rushed to hospital, while a 37-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds in a shooting in Belhar after being attacked while walking.

Police are yet to confirm reports of a further shooting in Glider Crescent, Factreton, where gunfire was reported at about 12.35am on Sunday, January 18. No official details on injuries or fatalities had been released at the time of publication.

All the cases remain under investigation and no arrests have been announced. Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
