FEARS of a taxi war are growing after another taxi-related shooting that claimed the life of a Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) taxi guard Tuesday morning in Delft.
Delft police were called to the corner of Orange and Hindle Road in Leiden around 6am, where they found the body of a 31-year-old man riddled with bullets.
The driver was shot in the chest and arm and transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Nceba Enge, chairperson of Codeta, confirmed that the victims belong to their organisation.
This shooting comes just two weeks after a triple murder at Voorbrug Taxi Rank in Delft Main Road, where Codeta and Cape Amalgamated Taxi Associations (Cata) members were killed on March 12.
Nceba said the latest shooting comes as they were on their way to a memorial service for one of their members killed in the Voorbrug Taxi Rank shooting.
“We can confirm that the victims belong to Codeta. We cannot confirm what the circumstances surrounding this incident are at the moment, but we are so shocked about what is happening, because this is not the first time."
“This seems like a continuation. We can confirm that the shooting is taxi-related, but we do not have the proper details.”
“We should think that this is going to escalate because of the times in between and the continuity of it (shootings)," Nceba said.
Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that cases of murder and attempted murder are under investigation.
“Delft police registered a case of murder and attempted murder, following a shooting incident at the corner of Orange and Hindle Road, Leiden.
“Members attended the scene at around 6am and found the body of a 31-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds. He was certified dead on the scene, while a second adult male victim, who sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and right arm, was transported to a medical facility," Gwala said.
The case was transferred to Provincial Serious Violent Crime detectives for further investigation.
