Solomon Mahlatini’s vision for artistic expression and community
From selling his first painting at the age of 12 to becoming a celebrated artist, Solomon Mahlatini has built a career rooted in authenticity, identity, and community.

Born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, Mahlatini’s creative journey began at home, surrounded by a family of performers, sketch artists, and painters.
His uncle introduced him to abstract art, a moment that ignited a lifelong passion. “Seeing one of his paintings made me curious to explore how he created it and what thought process was behind it,” Mahlatini shared with GQ.
His artistry transcends traditional mediums. Mahlatini’s work frequently incorporates unconventional materials like leather, metal, and fabric, drawing audiences into textured narratives that challenge their perspectives.
“Texture is visually enticing,” he explains. “It urges viewers to see objects, things, and situations differently from their usual understanding.”
Mahlatini’s journey took him far from Harare to the United States, where he honed his storytelling skills at Columbia College Hollywood.
The filmmaking and television production program expanded his understanding of narrative, which became a cornerstone of his work.
“Storytelling is universal,” he says. “Art and filmmaking both aim to express emotions and experiences in ways that resonate with others.”
Living in Oklahoma, a conservative part of the country, offered Mahlatini unexpected support. “I felt the most love and appreciation for my work there, despite being different,” he reflects. “That community taught me the universality of my art.”
Mahlatini’s experiences as an African artist abroad mirror a larger movement. African-born creatives—across visual art, music, fashion, and film—are redefining global culture.
From fashion brands like Daily Paper to musicians like Burna Boy and the worldwide success of films like Black Panther and The Woman King, the demand for African creativity is soaring.
“African artists are proving that our stories are universal, but we need inclusive platforms that champion our voices,” Mahlatini emphasizes.
Identity lies at the core of Mahlatini’s art. He views it not as a static concept but as something that evolves with life’s experiences. “Identity isn’t a monolith. It’s shaped daily by the environment and our journeys,” he says. Through his work, he captures this fluidity, offering audiences a lens into their own evolving sense of self.
Mahlatini’s advocacy extends beyond the canvas. Through his ZUNDE ART HUB foundation, he provides a platform for African artists to showcase their talent and tell their stories authentically.
“I want more African voices in the global canon,” he says. “Our narratives should be told by us, not through degrading propaganda.”
The foundation also fosters social awareness, using art as a tool to highlight inequities and inspire change. “Art memorializes events and emotions,” Mahlatini explains. “It reveals hidden societal agendas and empowers communities to speak up.”
As the demand for African art rises globally, Mahlatini believes artists are at the forefront of a cultural renaissance. “There’s an energy—something’s shifting,” he says.
“My peers, whether they’re running major fashion brands, hosting top podcasts, or streaming bigger than rappers, are part of a movement that’s changing the game.”
This momentum is reflected in Mahlatini’s accolades, including the OVAC Momentum Oklahoma Curator’s Choice Award and the East Central University Director’s Award.
While he values these recognitions, he remains grounded. “Art is subjective,” he says. “Awards remind me that my work resonates with diverse people, which is my ultimate aim.”
As Mahlatini reflects on his journey, from Harare to global recognition, he’s driven by a simple yet profound purpose: connection. “Art is about human connection,” he says. “It’s a beacon of hope, a tool for change, and a reminder that our experiences are more similar than different.”
For Mahlatini, the future is about continuing to tell unfiltered truths through his art, expanding the reach of ZUNDE ART HUB, and inspiring the next generation of African creatives. “We are beautiful,” he says. “Our stories deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated—by us and the world.”
