In a reassuring conversation with the Daily News, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has pledged that the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) remains steadfast amidst rising tensions and challenges within the coalition.
Speaking in Durban on Friday, Ntuli expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts of the provincial executive committee, highlighting the importance of robust discussions and mutual respect amongst the diverse political representatives involved.
“The main reason the GPU is still operational is that we discuss all matters that need to be addressed,” Ntuli explained.
“We constantly engage in robust discussions, and from there, we come out unified.”
This declaration comes as a response to previous predictions from detractors who claimed that the coalition would not last beyond a month.
Despite the political frictions, particularly in recent months when the ANC levelled accusations against the IFP and the DA for manipulating their positions within the GPU, but Ntuli remains optimistic that are on a good path.
He emphasised that respect among coalition members was paramount of importance.
“The manner in which we are focused on the issues that affect society is what makes government work,” he asserted.
Mike Mabuyakhulu, the ANC's provincial coordinator, has previously echoed this sane sentiment of stability and mutual cooperation.
He confirmed the ANC's commitment to the GPU, and stated unequivocally, “We are in the GPU with those with whom we should cooperate.
However, we are also competitors.” Mabuyakhulu affirmed that the ANC leadership understands this balance, aiming for stability while managing the inherent competitive nature of political partnerships.
The GPU, which comprises various parties, has previously found itself strained as members grappled for power, influence and enforcing their respective ideologies.
However, Ntuli reassured citizens that the coalition was addressing its challenges collaboratively, with the vital aim of enhancing the lives of KwaZulu-Natal's populace, which remained at the forefront of their agenda.
