Minister calls for investigation into Soweto house collapse as tragedy claims three lives

The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, has initiated an urgent investigation into the unfortunate collapse of a double storey house in Soweto that resulted in the loss of three lives.

The devastating incident, which occurred early on Sunday morning, has sparked immediate action and concern within the construction sector regarding safety protocols and regulatory oversight.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, where they confirmed that three individuals two adult females and a child tragically lost their lives. Additionally, three others were trapped beneath the debris, requiring rapid assistance.

After being rescued, these individuals were transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, with one woman reported to be in critical condition, while another woman and a child sustained minor injuries.

“This is a deeply distressing incident. My thoughts and condolences are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, as well as with all those who were injured as a result of this tragic collapse,” Minister Macpherson expressed in a heartfelt statement.

In his commitment to accountability, Macpherson asserted that the Council for the Built Environment (CBE) will conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the causes of the collapse.

He stressed the importance of identifying responsible parties and implementing measures to prevent such heart-wrenching events in the future.

“The safety of construction workers and the public remains the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure’s highest priority,” he added.

“We will respect due process and cooperate fully with all regulatory bodies throughout the investigation. Once all the facts have been established, appropriate action will be taken.”

Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson, Xolile Khumalo, echoed the dire situation, confirming that the incident has been handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.

“The tragic loss of life and the suffering of those injured highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety standards in our construction industry,” Khumalo stated.

The consequences of this event resonate far beyond the immediate loss; they call into question the regulations that govern the construction sector, urging a reassessment of safety measures that should protect both workers and the community.
