Legendary French actress, singer and champion of animal rights, Brigitte Bardot, passed away at 91 at her home, La Madrague, in Saint-Tropez on Sunday, December 28.

While a specific cause of death was not immediately disclosed by her foundation, she had reportedly been on a medical decline following a hospitalisation earlier in the year.

"The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with immense sadness the death of its founder and president, Madame Brigitte Bardot, a world-renowned actress and singer, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation," read a statement.

Her passing marks the end of an era for a woman who was not only the face of French cinema but a global symbol of liberation and defiance.

A cinematic legacy

Known simply as B.B., Bardot redefined the "screen siren" for the modern age. She starred in 47 films before walking away from the industry at the height of her fame to devote her life to activism. Some of her most iconic works include:

  • "And God Created Woman" (1956): The film that made her an international sensation and a symbol of the sexual revolution.

  • "Contempt" (1963): Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, this masterpiece is widely considered her finest acting achievement.

  • "Viva Maria!" (1965): A spirited adventure alongside Jeanne Moreau that earned her a BAFTA nomination.

  • "The Truth" (1960): A legal drama that showcased her range and remains one of her most acclaimed performances.

  • "La Parisienne" (1957): A charming comedy that highlighted her natural wit and screen presence.

Tributes from the stars

The news of her passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and admiration from colleagues and admirers across the globe:

"I was heartbroken to awaken to the news that the gorgeous Brigitte Bardot has left us. When I was a teenager, I idolised her," said singer and actress Nancy Sinatra.

"Her innocent sexuality - paired with slightly messy hair and those unmistakable pouty lips - made her an icon. The movie 'Dear Brigitte' is a perfect example of her sweetness and charm. Her style continues to be emulated, but there will only ever be one B.B. Godspeed, dear Brigitte. My deepest condolences to her family and to all who loved her."

"Her films, her voice, her dazzling fame, her initials, her sorrows, her generous passion for animals. A French existence, a universal radiance. She moved us. We mourn a legend of the century," wrote President of France, Emmanuel Macron on X.

Paul Watson, environmental campaigner and longtime collaborator of Bardot, said: "The animals of this world lost a wonderful friend today. Her allegiance was not to the world of humans ... She was an angel for those who have no voice."
