When Oprah Winfrey stepped out at Paris Fashion Week over the past few days, it wasn’t just the couture that captured attention.
The media mogul’s noticeably slimmer appearance quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the shows she attended.
From Zimmermann to Chloé, Stella McCartney and Chanel, Winfrey made a series of front-row appearances, wearing elegant, understated outfits that showcased a strikingly lean silhouette.
At Zimmermann, she turned heads in a rich brown leather ensemble that highlighted her trim waist.
The television icon was photographed alongside actress Naomi Watts, with fashion watchers noting how confident and relaxed she appeared as she greeted fellow guests.
Her appearance at the Chloé show also sparked widespread discussion online, with many observers remarking on how dramatically her figure had changed.
But while the reaction may have been sudden for some viewers, Winfrey herself has been remarkably open about the long and often difficult journey behind her transformation.
For decades, Winfrey has spoken candidly about her fluctuating weight and the emotional toll it took.
Her struggles with dieting, body image and public scrutiny have been documented throughout her career, making her recent transformation part of a much longer story rather than a sudden change.
In recent weeks, the 72-year-old has even been sharing glimpses of her current fitness routine on social media, offering followers an honest look at how she maintains her health.
In one post marking her birthday, Winfrey revealed how strength training has become central to her routine.
“Life at 72 is looking different than every other decade. Two summers and two new knees ago, I decided to add strength training to my workouts because we all need to maintain muscle as we get older. I can’t say I’m ready for the Olympics like Adele but I sure feel stronger,” she wrote.
Another post showed her completing an intense birthday workout session.
“I never thought I’d spend my birthday doing a workout let alone a 72-minute one! But as I get older, I am fully aware that it’s a privilege to have a body that can do the treadmill, the bike, the climber, the ski machine, and every machine Trainer Peter throws my way.”
Part of Winfrey’s renewed commitment to movement followed a major health challenge. In 2021, she underwent two knee replacement surgeries just months apart.
The recovery process was difficult, she later explained, leaving her temporarily unable to even lift her leg.
“When I came home the first time, I literally could not lift my leg. I couldn’t lift my heel off of the bed,” she said, recalling how the experience changed her outlook on physical health.
That moment became a turning point. Once she regained mobility, she promised herself she would never again take movement for granted.
“If I was ever able to get up, walk around, and move again, that I would take advantage of movement, exercise, and of being able to be fully in my body.”
During rehabilitation, she began hiking daily, gradually building strength and endurance.
“My appreciation for every organ and every limb has expanded exponentially,” she added.
As images from Paris Fashion Week circulated, speculation about the source of Winfrey’s weight loss resurfaced, a pattern increasingly familiar for celebrities who undergo dramatic physical changes.
Winfrey has previously addressed the topic directly, acknowledging that she uses a doctor-prescribed GLP-1 medication designed to regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.
The treatment belongs to the same class of drugs commonly associated with medications such as Ozempic.
Speaking to People, Winfrey described the availability of medically approved weight-management treatments as transformative after decades of struggle.
“The fact that there's a medically approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier, in my lifetime, feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift,” she said.
Importantly, she has emphasised that medication is only one element of her overall approach.
Rather than a quick fix, she describes it as a tool that works alongside lifestyle changes such as hiking, meditation, resistance training and running.
Winfrey’s transformation arrives amid growing scrutiny over weight loss in Hollywood.
Recently, actress Demi Moore drew similar attention after appearing noticeably slimmer while attending shows for Schiaparelli and Gucci during Milan Fashion Week.
But in Winfrey’s case, the difference is that much of her journey has unfolded publicly over the years, through candid interviews, personal reflections and, more recently, social media updates documenting her workouts and recovery.
If the buzz at Paris Fashion Week proved anything, it’s that Winfrey remains as influential as ever, not only in media but also in shaping conversations around health, ageing and self-acceptance.
Her slimmer frame may have surprised some observers, but by her own account, it is the result of years of effort, setbacks and renewed determination to care for her body.
And judging by her front-row confidence in Paris, it is a chapter she is embracing fully.
