Understanding retinoid reactions: signs of healing or cause for concern?
Getting a skin reaction usually causes panic, however, sometimes it could be a sign of healing, particularly when using retinoids.
Retinoid is used to achieve smoother and youthful skin. And before you can get to the desired results, it is important to note that you may get some reactions.
“A retinoid reaction, while challenging, is a temporary condition that can be easily managed. As the skin gradually adapts to increased levels of vitamin A, the reaction will subside over time, allowing the skin to build tolerance,” explained Dr Des Fernandes, a scientific director at Environ Skin Care.
“It indicates that your skin is in need of vitamin A. By slowly and consistently introducing vitamin A, you give your skin the chance to normalise and restore its health.”
He also explained the important role of Vitamin A on the skin and the effects it has on the receptors.
“When the skin is exposed to UV light, both the vitamin A and its receptors on the cell walls are destroyed. This not only depletes the skin of this essential nutrient but also reduces the receptors necessary to process it.
“Without sufficient receptors, vitamin A cannot be effectively metabolised, leading to a build-up outside the cells which causes chemical irritation — commonly known as a retinoid reaction."
Some of the most common symptoms of retinoid reaction include dryness, redness, itchiness, and a warm sensation in the skin.
Like with any other reaction, the symptoms may be uncomfortable on the skin but there is a way in which you can manage them.
“You need to give your skin the chance to recover somewhat before gradually reintroducing the product,” said Fernandes.
“Incorporating a product like Environ Super Moisturiser is highly recommended, especially for those with dry, sensitive, or dehydrated skin.
“It is particularly effective for managing temporary dryness caused by environmental factors or changes in skincare routines, helping to restore the skin’s natural moisture balance.”
Also, note that applying sunscreen regularly is important when using retinoids because it helps prevent the sun UV rays from penetrating your skin, which in turn, decreases the chances of getting a reaction.
