While Formula 1 may be drenched in glitz, glamour and champagne spray from the outside, the reality behind the velvet rope is far more demanding. The pressure is relentless. The travel is brutal.

The scrutiny is constant. And the sacrifices required to survive at the pinnacle of motorsport are enormous.

Just ask Kimi Antonelli. The 19 year old Mercedes rookie is preparing for his first full season with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, stepping into one of the most high profile seats on the grid. But as the season approaches, Antonelli will do so without his girlfriend by his side. His recent breakup has quietly highlighted the personal cost of chasing Formula 1 glory. Antonelli had been in a relationship with Czech karting driver Eliska Babickova.

Speculation began swirling on social media when fans noticed the pair were no longer posting together. Babickova eventually addressed the rumours directly, confirming the split herself.

In a candid message to followers, she explained that the decision was hers. She said the breakup was recent and made it clear there was no scandal attached.

“There was no cheating or third person involved,” she stated, shutting down online gossip before it could spiral.

She added that they were simply no longer aligned in their values and future goals. It was a mature and measured response, but it underscored a deeper truth about life in Formula 1. It showed a deep truth about life an a professional athlete in general.

From March to December, F1 drivers are rarely in one place for long. Race weekends, simulator sessions, factory visits, sponsor commitments and relentless travel leave little room for normality. Even in the off season, preparation never truly stops. For a rookie like Antonelli, the demands are amplified. He is not only adapting to new circuits and faster machinery, but also embedding himself within Mercedes’ complex technical structure.

Every debrief matters. Every fitness session counts. Every media appearance is scrutinised. Time becomes the most precious commodity of all. And time is often what relationships need most.

Rumours in the paddock suggest that Antonelli is not alone in starting the season single. Reigning World Champion Lando Norris has also been widely reported to have split from Portuguese model Margarida “Magui” Corceiro.

While neither side has made dramatic public statements, speculation was turned to truth during pre-season testing when Norris appeared solo and confirmed he was single. Whether coincidence or consequence, the timing is telling.

Pre-season is arguably the most intense period of the year. Drivers spend almost every waking minute preparing, physically sharpening their bodies, mentally rehearsing race scenarios, working through engineering data and aligning with their teams.

It is a tunnel vision phase. Families, partners and even close friends inevitably feel the distance. Such is the sacrifice required when chasing Formula 1 glory.

The uncomfortable truth is that the sacrifice is compulsory, but the glory is not guaranteed. For every champion crowned, 19 other drivers fall short. Careers can turn on a mechanical failure, a strategic misstep or a fraction of a second.

Antonelli’s story is a reminder that behind the carbon fibre and corporate polish are young athletes making adult sacrifices at extraordinary speed. The world sees podiums and contracts. What it does not always see are the quiet goodbyes before a season even begins.
