English comedy actor John Cleese has returned to the classroom – this time in Cape Town at the SA College High School (Sacs).

On set for the filming of the SA feature film sequel Spud 2: The Madness Continues, based on the books by John van de Ruit, Cleese is once again playing “The Guv”.

Cleese, 72, was forced to spend all day shooting indoors at Sacs in Newlands yesterday as bad weather kept the cast and crew inside.

Filming began on July 1 and, weather permitting, should end on August 4.

The sequel is being filmed at Sacs instead of Michaelhouse in the Natal Midlands, the location for the first film, because of budgetary issues, said Ross Garland, of Rogue Star Films, the company responsible for the production.

“Transporting all the people to the Natal Midlands was too expensive, so we had a look around Cape Town for an alternative location, all we needed was a beautiful old school and Sacs fit the bill.”

The location is the only change from Spud 1, and audiences can expect the same cast, including SA-born Troye Sivan, playing John “Spud” Milton, Tanit Phoenix as Mrs Eve Wilson and Julie Summers as Spud’s mother, Mrs Milton.

Garland said the production was going very well.

“The film is a comedy, so we are all having a lot of fun.”

Cape Town was a popular destination for Cleese, who was there late last year performing his Alimony tour. Work aside, it is a city he loves to visit for a holiday, usually choosing to stay at the Mount Nelson.
