Cape Town - A Nigerian male suspect was arrested in the Karoo on Wednesday morning after police caught him driving a vehicle containing over R2 million worth of drugs, police said.
Western Cape police spokesperson Andrè Traut said the arrest took place at around 1am after police caught sight of a vehicle they deemed suspicious.
“The vehicle was [stopped] for a routine inspection, which led to the discovery of [one kilogram] of cocaine hidden in a false compartment in the undercarriage,” said Traut.
“This prompted the members to intensify their search which resulted in a further 1 kg cocaine and 5.2 kg [of] tik being found in the bodywork of the vehicle in compartments under the canopy,” he said.
The total street value of the confiscated drugs stood at an estimated R2.6 million.
The suspect, a 39-year-old Nigerian male from the troubled Du Noon area in Cape Town, will – once charged – make a court appearance on a charge of dealing in drugs.
“We are pleased with the outcome of our intervention and regard the seizure and subsequent arrest of the suspect [as] a major blow to the drug trade,” said Traut.
