The National Consumer Commission (NCC) and L’Oréal South Africa have initiated a voluntary recall of certain batches of Dark and Lovely Precise Diamond Hair Relaxer following 22 consumer complaints .
Cosmetic company L’Oréal South Africa announced this weekend that it has initiated a voluntary recall of one batch of the locally produced Dark and Lovely Precise Diamond Straight and Shine Relaxer 125ml tub.
“An isolated incident in the production led to an imbalance of the active raw material, affecting one batch only which gave rise to 22 consumer complaints. All other batches remain safe and available,” the company said.
The affected batch carries the batch numbers 87UD00 and 87UD01 and the batch numbers can be found on the back of the jar.
According to L’Oréal South Africa, consumers who purchased the affected batch may experience increased hair breakage and scalp irritation.
“All other batches produced of the Dark and Lovely Precise Diamond Straight and Shine Relaxer since the affected batches above have no quality problems recorded and this issue is isolated to the above batch numbers. No other products in the Dark and Lovely range are affected,” the cosmetic company said.
L’Oréal South Africa said that as a precautionary measure, production and marketing of this product has been stopped.
“The Dark and Lovely Precise Diamond Straight and Shine Relaxer 125ml tubs with the batch numbers 87UD00 and 87UD01 are being withdrawn from all affected retail points of sale. Consumers who have purchased products with either of these batch numbers must not use the product and must return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the company said.
The NCC urged consumers in possession of the product to immediately discontinue use of the product and return it to the point of sale for a full refund.
“We urge South Africans who are in possession of Dark and Lovely Precise Diamond Straight and Shine relaxer 125ml tub to return the product to the point of purchase for a refund. We understand that an isolated incident in the production led to an imbalance of the active raw material, affecting one batch only. Using the recalled product may lead to increased hair breakage, and increased scalp irritation” Acting Consumer Commissioner Thezi Mabuza said.
The NCC added that the product was distributed nationally and exported to neighbouring countries including Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, eSwatini, Zambia and Madagascar.
“The Consumer Protection Act requires that manufacturers and producers of products produce and supply goods and products that are of good quality and free of defects. We urge suppliers and manufactures to prioritise consumer safety at all times. The Commission is monitoring the recall based on its Recall Guidelines” Mabuza said.
