THE Gauteng department of health is investigating the cause of the death of a Zimbabwean woman who died at a Krugersdorp hospital shortly after giving birth to an overweight child.
Luyanda Moyo, 21, died at the Yusuf Dadoo Hospital after she gave birth to her son. The Star understands that Luyanda had been complaining about pain after she gave birth. In voice notes to her mother, Luyanda had complained that nurses had not attended to her pain.
According to Luyanda’s uncle, Gibson Tshuma, Luyanda’s clothes were covered with blood stains hours after she had given birth.
The family said it was in disbelief and were wondering if Luyanda would have received proper medical attention if she was not an illegal Zimbabwean.
The concerns emanate from a statement that had gone viral on social media by the MEC for Health in Limpopo, Phophi Ramathuba. Ramathuba was seen on video lambasting a Zimbabwean patient and accusing her of burdening the South African health system.
“The hospital told us that they had information as to what happened but they said they cannot tell us what they found and that they need a specialist to also confirm their own findings, and they also wanted a pathologist’s report,” Tshuma said.
Tshuma said the family had informed the hospital that they would be travelling to Zimbabwe for the burial this week. The hospital had said they would inform the family of the cause of death on whatsapp.
“We still wonder how many women giving birth could die under their watch,” Tshuma said.
The Star had still not received a response from the Gauteng health department despite several emails.
