Johannesburg – Chairperson of Music Creators South Africa (MSCSA), musician and activist Nomsa Mazwai, opens up about hosting the inaugural AGM on November 25 at the Apollo Hotel in Randburg.

According to Mazwai, the South African music industry has not had an organised and national voice to represent the rights of composers and songwriters since 2017.

In a country where non-payment of royalties to artists is a common occurrence, Mazwai says this calls for concern.

Mazwai opens up about the persistent struggle for economic rights as well as the voice needed for a successful South African creative industry.

“Though the industry, as a whole, has been in an ongoing battle for the economic rights of artists, an organised and clear composers’ voice is required for a successful South African creative industry,” she says.

With these battles prevalent in the entertainment industry, the MCSA is an association developed to represent the interests of composers and songwriters.

Mazwai is currently working towards building socio-economic competitiveness and responsiveness amongst Southern African people at the grassroots level.

She does her work through arts, education, and economic development initiatives.

The association also creates tools that help music creators achieve sustainable careers.

With icons Tshepo Nzimande and Yvonne Chaka Chaka, as well as the former CEO of SAMRO, Nothando Migogo, on its board of directors, its mission is in the right hands.

MCSA firmly believes in the culture of collaboration, which is why the association encourages all South African music creators and composers to register for membership ahead of the AGM.

At the AGM, Mazwai, Nzimande, Migogo, and Chaka-Chaka’s roles as directors will be up for re-election.

Music professionals with skills to empower the board are invited to make themselves available for nomination to fill additional seats on the board at the AGM.

MCSA is an organisation that empowers music copyright creators with tools to lead effective, sustainable careers and businesses as music copyright creators.

The organisation further provides advice and information about composers’ rights within the South African legal framework.

MCSA encourages a culture of collaboration and seeks to ensure that careers in the creative industries are vibrant and foster sustainable livelihoods.

To obtain voting rights and stand a chance of joining the board, musicians will have to be an official member of MCSA.
