DANIEL Wilfred Alberts, the 38-year-old man accused of shooting and killing two police officers in Kimberley in August, has been ordered by the Kimberley District Court to undergo a 30-day psychiatric evaluation.
Alberts is currently facing several charges including two counts of murder after he allegedly gunned down two Kimberley Flying Squad members - Constable Okaetse Mandindi, 35, and Sergeant Kedimetse Masilo, 45.
He is also facing three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, one count of theft of a motor vehicle and one count of theft.
The two police officers were following up on information about a motor vehicle that was stolen in Bloemfontein and en route to Kimberley on August 22.
Following a high-speed car chase in the city, Alberts allegedly overpowered the officers, took possession of an R5 rifle and opened fire, killing the sergeant and constable.
Alberts' matter has been postponed to January 29, 2024, to allow for him to undergo and complete a psychiatric evaluation, for which he is currently number 36 on the waiting list.
Alberts, who indicated at his first court appearance in August that he wouldn't be seeking bail, is currently being held in custody.
