The search for journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli, has ended in a tragic way. The couple was discovered in a veld in the Kwa Mhlanga area, ending the couple’s disappearance since 18 February 2025.

The remains, found decomposing, were identified by the forensic team, confirming the tragic loss. The discovery was made following a lengthy investigation led by a multi-disciplinary team of law enforcement agencies. Police had recently arrested five suspects, three of whom have already appeared in court.

One of the suspects reportedly pointed out the location where the remains were found, National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, confirmed.

Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, expressed his deepest condolences on behalf of the Presidency and the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).

He condemned the murders as a senseless and brutal act of violence, highlighting Ndlovu’s dedication to public service through his work in the media.

"Mr. Ndlovu made significant contributions to democracy by informing and educating the public. His loss, along with Ms. Mdhluli’s, is a tragic reminder of the violence that continues to plague our communities," Morolong stated.

The Deputy Minister also visited the family of Aserie Ndlovu on 4 May 2025 to offer support and announced plans to visit Capital Live FM in Mamelodi, the station Ndlovu founded, to comfort the staff and honour his legacy.

The safety of journalists in South Africa is a growing concern, with both physical threats and digital harassment becoming increasingly common.

South Africa has a relatively strong legal framework protecting freedom of expression and the press, but journalists, especially those covering corruption, organised crime, or political issues, face several risks.

The African Media and Communicators Forum (AMCF) and the National Press Club (NPC) have expressed shock and sadness over the deaths.

Elijah Mhlanga, Chairperson of the AMCF, noted that the media community had held onto hope that the couple would be found alive. He pledged ongoing support to the families and attendance at court proceedings involving the suspects.

The reasons for the murder are still not known. This is a developing story.
