The community of Toekomsrus is in shock following the brutal killing of 16-year-old Danté Diederik, a special-needs learner at Pro-Practicum School, who was stabbed to death while waiting for his school bus on Friday morning.

According to witnesses, Danté was eating his breakfast at his regular bus stop when he was attacked. Police have confirmed that a minor has been arrested in connection with the killing, while a second suspect remains at large.

The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage, with residents saying gang violence in the area is spiralling out of control — and increasingly, it is children who are paying the ultimate price.

“Danté was a quiet, sweet child who didn’t bother anyone,” said a neighbour, still visibly shaken. “He just wanted to go to school. Now his life has been stolen for nothing.”

A video circulating on social media shows members of the community, parents, and fellow learners gathered near the scene, many in tears. In the video, a resident can be heard saying, “It’s not the first time — how many more children must die before something is done?”

Police say while the motive remains under investigation, early indications point to gang-related violence, which has plagued the Randfontein suburb for years. In recent months, tensions between rival youth gangs have flared again, with children often caught in the crossfire.

“This is not an isolated incident,” said a local community leader. “We have been calling for stronger policing and intervention for years. The fact that a child with special needs could be attacked in broad daylight speaks volumes about the lawlessness we’re facing.”

The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed its condolences to Danté’s family and the Pro-Practicum school community. Spokesperson Steve Mabona said trauma counselling will be offered to affected learners and staff.

The school released a brief statement, saying Danté was a "beloved member of the school community" and that his death has left teachers and classmates heartbroken.

As police continue their manhunt for the second suspect, community members are demanding a more aggressive crackdown on gang activity in the area.

“We need real action, not just more promises,” said another parent. “We’re tired of burying our children.”

Police have urged anyone with information about the second suspect to come forward and have assured the public that all leads are being pursued.

Meanwhile, a memorial for Danté is being planned by local residents and the school. The community says it will not allow his death to be forgotten — and they are calling for justice, not just for Danté, but for every young life lost to gang violence in Toekomsrus.
