Two North West men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing a man outside a coffee shop in 2023.
Sibongiseni Ngubane, 35, and Thabani Gwala, 32, were sentenced by the North West High Court on Thursday, after being found guilty of murdering Ben Gumbi, 49, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
According to North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, Gumbi was shot and killed outside a coffee shop in the Rustenburg Central Business District (CBD) on August 23, 2023.
“The suspects then fled the scene in a blue Volkswagen Polo car, which was found abandoned a few blocks away."
Mokgwabone said a multi-disciplinary team, which was established after the incident, arrested Ngubane and Gwala in Germiston and Hillbrow, Gauteng, in September 2023 and November, respectively.
Ngubane and Gwala were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, and 15 years imprisonment for possession of a firearm to run concurrently.
This week, police made a breakthrough in the case by arresting a third suspect in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal.
He is expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.
