A Limpopo woman has been arrested and charged with the murder of her toddler son.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the child was found dead on Sunday night in Tshififi village.

Ledwaba said that police were alerted to a murder incident at a local homestead in the area.

“Upon arrival, police found community members gathered at the scene.

"Inside the house, they discovered the lifeless body of a three-year-old boy, lying on the ground half-naked with visible injuries on the upper body,” said Ledwaba.

He said the child's mother,38, has been arrested after family members and neighbours reportedly tried to intervene in entering the room but were unable to gain entry until community members forced the door open.

"Unfortunately, by the time they gained access, the child had already lost his life.

“Emergency Medical Services were summoned to the scene and certified the child dead.

He said the mother, who is believed to be mentally ill, was arrested and placed under police guard before being transported to the local hospital for medical treatment.

Ledwaba further stated that the suspect will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder.
