Residents of Johannesburg have been advised to take extra care as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flooding continue to affect large parts of Gauteng.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a severe thunderstorm alert for the city on Monday morning, warning of intense rainfall, lightning, and localised flooding in several areas. Rain has already been reported across many suburbs, and conditions are expected to worsen as the day progresses.

SAWS cautioned that the storm system may bring strong winds, heavy downpours, and lightning strikes later in the afternoon. Low-lying areas are at particular risk of flooding, and traffic congestion is expected to increase as motorists navigate wet and slippery roads.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Kagiso Phasha urged residents to remain indoors where possible and to avoid flooded roads or bridges.

“Drivers are advised to slow down, keep headlights on, and maintain a safe following distance,” Phasha said. “Residents should stay alert and follow official weather updates. In case of emergencies, contact the City’s call centre at 011 375 5911 or dial 112.”

Phasha added that EMS teams remain on high alert to respond to incidents related to the storm.

The severe weather is not limited to Gauteng. The South African Weather Service has also issued warnings for parts of the North West, Free State, and Northern Cape.

Thunderstorms in these regions could cause damage to property, vehicles, and infrastructure. Flooding in low-lying areas and on major routes is also possible, particularly in the western parts of the North West.

Residents in affected areas are urged to monitor weather updates closely and take safety precautions to protect their homes, livestock, and livelihoods.
