A massive manhunt is under way after gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets at a tavern in Bekkersdal, Gauteng, killing nine people and leaving 10 others wounded.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday, December 21, just before 01:00, at a licensed tavern in the Tambo section.

“It is alleged that about 12 unknown suspects, travelling in a white kombi and a silver sedan, opened fire on patrons inside the tavern and continued shooting randomly as they fled the scene,” Muridili said.

The injured victims were rushed to various medical facilities for treatment, while several others were left traumatised by the brazen attack.

Muridili said police have mobilised all necessary resources, including Forensic Crime Scene Management, detectives and Crime Intelligence, as part of an intensive investigation to track down those responsible.

“The motive for the shooting is still unknown and will be determined through investigations,” she said.

Police have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information that may help identify the suspects to contact SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit tip-offs anonymously via the MySAPS App.

This is a developing story.
