Children drinking alcohol: Video causes public outcry and investigation

The Department of Social Development (DSD) has condemned a disturbing viral video circulating in the Eastern Cape, in which adults allow young children to drink alcohol.

The outrage stems from a disturbing 22-second video circulating on social media, which shows children believed to be between four and 12 years old holding and consuming alcohol while adults stand by in the background. The footage is believed to have been recorded on Christmas Day.

DSD spokesperson Sandy Godlwana said the department was shocked by the footage.

“We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for encouraging such behaviour are held accountable.”

Godlwana further revealed that the department is currently investigating the matter and will take the necessary action.

“We call upon those who witnessed this incident or have information regarding where it took place to come forward and report it. The festive season should be a time of love, rest, and renewal. However, it is also a period when the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse increase, particularly among children and young people,” she said.

The DSD warned that such incidents have devastating consequences for individuals, families, and communities. Parents and caregivers are urged to stay vigilant and protect their children, especially during the festive season.

“Celebrations should uphold strong family values, positive role models, and safe environments that nurture and safeguard young people. The department remains steadfast in enforcing the Children’s Act (38 of 2005), which is designed to uphold the rights and protection of all children,” it stated.

Meanwhile, Minister of Social Development Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe urged the public to avoid excessive alcohol use and to say no to drugs during the festive season and beyond.

"I urge all South Africans to avoid excessive alcohol use and to say no to drugs during the festive season and beyond. Alcohol and drugs rob families of precious moments, fuel violence, contribute to road fatalities and derail the future of our children and youth.

“To the youth of South Africa, choose fun, games, sports, and quality family time during this festive period and not alcohol or drugs. You are precious, and your future matters. Staying sober helps you enjoy the festive season safely," said Tolashe.
