Police have arrested three suspects following a deadly shooting on the R59 near Meyerton on Tuesday, February 3, in which six people were killed and several others injured.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, a minibus taxi travelling from Johannesburg towards Lesotho was attacked by occupants of a Nissan Juke. The suspects allegedly rammed the taxi before opening fire, causing the vehicle to overturn.

“All six deceased were passengers in the minibus and are believed to be nationals of Lesotho,” Sibeko said.

The shooting left 18 other passengers injured, who were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana confirmed the incident, describing it as a harrowing attack. He praised the swift response by law enforcement, which led to the arrest of three suspects shortly after the shooting.

Sibeko revealed that the Nissan Juke used in the attack had been reported stolen in Witbank in September 2025. After the shooting, the suspects allegedly hijacked another vehicle along Johan Le Roux Road and fled the scene.

“The suspects were tracked and arrested at Valley Settlement in Kliprivier,” Sibeko said.

The operation involved multiple law enforcement units, including the K9 unit, Public Order Policing, Kliprivier Visible Policing, the Midvaal Traffic Department, Midvaal peace officers, and private security companies.

Police have opened six counts of murder, 18 counts of attempted murder, as well as charges of carjacking and possession of a hijacked vehicle. Investigations into the motive for the attack are ongoing.

“All suspects are expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court soon,” Sibeko said.
