Despite Khawula's public claims that he has been subpoenaed, the Madlanga Commission has refused to confirm whether the controversial blogger will testify before it.

The standoff has increased scrutiny of the commission's work and reignited debate about whether Khawula's arrest in January 2025 was routine law enforcement or the result of high-level political pressure.

On Tuesday, Khawula posted a screenshot on X showing what he claimed was a message and missed call from the commission, implying he had been summoned to appear.

The post quickly spread, fuelling speculation that the outspoken blogger could become a central figure in the inquiry.

But commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels shut down confirmation.

“The Commission does not ventilate its confidential communication in public,” Michaels said.

“There are many engagements unfolding with a number of individuals. We certainly do not want to get into a discussion in public on any of those matters.”

He stressed that while Khawula had chosen to publicise the alleged communication, the commission would not follow suit.

“We want to discourage individuals from taking confidential engagements and placing them on social media,” he said, adding that respect for due process and privacy remains paramount.

Khawula’s potential appearance carries weight.

His arrest in January 2025, executed under a warrant citing contravention of Section 19 of the Cybercrimes Act, crimen injuria and hate speech, was thrust into controversy after explosive testimony before the Commission.

Witness F, alleged the arrest followed complaints from ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, and businessman Ze Nxumalo.

Khawula had accused Mbalula and his wife on social media of involvement in a multi-million rand fraud scandal, allegations they have denied.

The hearings are set to resume on Thursday after an adjournment on Wednesday due to a witness calling in sick.
