City Power warns of fraudulent job training scam targeting unemployed residents

City Power has warned job seekers to be on high alert after a fraudulent WhatsApp and social media message promised a “once-in-a-lifetime” training opportunity, falsely claiming the utility would fund nationally recognised ARPL (Artisan Recognition for Prior Learning) qualifications.

The scam specifically targets unemployed residents with N1–N6 electrical engineering qualifications, urging them to submit personal details and certified documents via WhatsApp to a private cellphone number.

The message also falsely claims that only a limited number of candidates will be accepted, creating a false sense of urgency.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena confirmed that the individual named in the message, Katlego Mthombeni (074 380 0996), is not authorised to recruit, shortlist, or represent the utility in any capacity.

“This advertisement is false, misleading, and unauthorised. The wording of the message is deliberately crafted to appear credible and appealing, particularly to unemployed individuals and residents seeking skills development opportunities,” Mangena said.

He warned that the scam is designed to collect sensitive personal information, including identity documents and qualification certificates, which could be used for identity theft or other criminal activity.

“City Power executives, officials, and departments do not recruit or process training opportunities via WhatsApp or private cellphone numbers. All legitimate recruitment, training, and development programmes are communicated exclusively through official City Power platforms and verified channels,” he added.

The utility urged residents to exercise caution, avoid responding to or sharing personal information with unknown individuals, and report the number on the relevant platform.

Those who may have already shared their information are encouraged to notify the South African Police Service and City Power’s Security Risk Management Control Room on 011 490 7900 / 7911 / 7553 or via WhatsApp at 083 579 4497.

City Power reiterated its commitment to protecting residents and stakeholders from fraudulent schemes and reminded the public that all vacancy and training opportunities should be accessed via the utility’s official portal.
